Which one is the most important?
English is the language which has some skills, like other languages, such as reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Many people say that the most important things which we have to master new language are speaking and writing only. However, which one is the most important between them? Before we know which one it is, writing or speaking, we should know some differences how they are got, their structure and style, and they durability. Also similarity as the technology influencer.
Writing or Speaking?

When we learn our own (native) language, learning to speak comes before learning to write. It is natural. That also happens when we study foreign language. We can even speak that language without knowing how the words written. We only need to listen to the people to speak and we can follow how they pronoun those words. Unlike writing, somebody must teach us to write. It is not naturally happen like speaking does. We have to know how to write alphabet, how to make a word. Then we will know how "blue" is written. In one sense, speaking is the "real" language that comes naturally because the words built in our brainand writing is only a representation of speaking.
- Structure and Style -
We usually write something with focusing on how the correct grammar and also organize what we write from sentences to paragraphs and to the next form. We also usually use formal vocabulary in writing (for example, we might write "the car exploded" but say "the car blew up") and do not usually use slang. In writing, we must use punctuation marks like commas and question marks (as a symbolic way of representing things like pauses or tone of voice in speaking). Unlike in speaking is much less formal, less structured way. We might not always think how the correct grammar and even make full sentences. The vocabulary that we use is more familiar and may include slang and also in a spontaneous way, without preparation, so we have to make up what we say as we go.
- Durability -
One important difference between speaking and writing is that writing is usually more durable or permanent. When we speak, our words only stay for a few moments. When we write, our words will stay for years or even centuries. This is why writing is usually used to provide a record of events, for example a business agreement or transaction. However, it does not mean that speaking can not be used for some important prove. It is like what people say can be their evidence or even their characteristic looks as well.
What makes them similar?
Modern inventions such as sound recording, telephone, radio, television, fax or email have made or are making an important impact on both speaking and writing. With the telephone and radiotelephone, it became possible for two people to carry on a conversation while not being in the same place. We use our writing skill to send a message, and we speak through the phone. Even a live television broadcast with a mixture of recordings, telephone calls, incoming faxes and emails and so on. One effect of this new technology and the modern universality of writing has been to raise the status of speaking. If we see in television about the debate of politicians who cannot organize their thoughts by writing about what they want to speak and speak well on television win very few votes.
All in all, if we see from their differences and similarity such as how they are built, how the structure, how long they can stay and their same impact in technology, both Writing and Speaking are the same skills which we have to master when we study a language. So, there is no one skill that better than other skills, try to master all skills as an English Learner.
